چکیده

Because many instances have been observed of the effects of light on metabolic processes, and because in the higher animals tbe glands of internal secretion act in part as chemical regulators of metabolism, we are undertaking certain studies on the effects on the endocrine tissues of exposure of the skin to ultra-violet light. In preparation for these studies it seemed desirable to make preliminary observations on the reactions of all the ductless glands available for examination, and to note such changes in weight and microscopic appearance as might indicate abnormal activity. Such a study is the more necessary because of various interrelationships among the endocrine glands that make isolated observations on a single tissue of doubtful value. Dr. Wade H. Brown and Dr. Louise Pearce have directed attention to this interdependence among certain of the glands of internal secretion in connection with their extensive studies on experimental syphilis and carcinoma in the rabbit. During the past 2 years they have collected data on individual and seasonal variations in the size, appearance, and functional activity of the endocrine tissues of a large number of normal animals. 1 These valuable records, mostly unpublished, they have kindly placed at our disposal. It would have been fruitless to make the observations on which this paper is based without the extensive control material thus afforded us. Even during the period covered by the experiments--November to February--there occurred in certain of the endocrine tissues a change, regarded as

Response of Ultimobranchial and Parathyroid Glands of the Indian Skipper Frog, Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis to Cadmium Toxicity

Background: Cadmium toxicity has been shown in aquatic animals but the effect on frog’s endocrine glands is not known. We investigated the effects of cadmium on ultimobranchial and parathyroid glands of Indian skipper frog, Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis. Methods: Frogs were exposed to cadmium chloride for short and long terms and sacrificed after 24, 48, 72 or 96 h (short-term) and after 5, 10, 1...

The Protective Effects of Jamun Seeds and Orange Peels Extracts on Calcitonin Cells and Parathyroid Glands Against Cypermethrin Toxicity

Background:This study aimed to investigate changes in calcitonin cells (C cells) and parathyroid glands (PTG) induced by cypermethrin exposure in rats and evaluate the protective effects of jamun seeds (Syzygium cumini; JSE) and orange peels (Citrus sinensis; OPE) extracts. Methods:Wistar rats (N=120) were treated in groups of 20 each as: Group A: Controls; Group B: cypermethrin (CY); Group C:...

PREVENTIVE EFFECTS OF VITAMIN A AND ASPIRIN ON UV LIGHT-INDUCED RETINOPATHY IN AN ANIMA L MODEL

In order to identify the effects of vitamin A and aspirin on reducing UV lightinduced retinopathy, ERG waves were compared before and after UV light exposure in rabbits. 30 rabbits were divided into 3 groups: the first group received vitamin A, 50,000 units I.M., single dose, the second group received aspirin, 50 mg/ kg/day PO and the third group did not receive any medication. All three gr...

Effect of salicylic acid sparay on the leaf ascorbate, proline and quercetin content in ultra-violet stressed Pepper seedlings

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of SA on UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C stressed plants. Data showed that SA counteracted the UV harmful effects on pepper. Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seedlings sprayed with salicylic acid (SA) and treated with UV-A (320-390 nm), UV-B (312 nm), and UV-C (254 nm) of 6.1, 5.8, and 5.7 W m-2, respectively. UV significantly increased contents of as...

SPECT-CT fusion in the diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism

Objective(s): In this study, we aimed to analyze the relationship between the diagnostic ability of fused single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) images in localization of parathyroid lesions and the size of adenomas or hyperplastic glands. Methods: Five patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and 4 patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) we...
